Property crime occurs every 6 minutes and 43 seconds in Nevada, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety. In 2017, these crimes resulted in more than $117 million worth of private property being stolen. The majority of property crime, which includes burglary and theft, occurs in Clark County.
Residents of suburbs in the Valley are not immune. While crime rates are indeed highest in neighborhoods adjacent to the Strip and downtown Las Vegas, troubling crime has crept into residential neighborhoods throughout the Valley. These include parts of Summerlin and Green Valley in Henderson, both of which have the reputation of being safe and family friendly.
After a rash of burglaries, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has encouraged residents to be proactive about their safety by installing home security devices such as alarms and recording devices.
Deciding to be proactive about home security in Las Vegas is only the first step. You also need to determine what level of security is right for you. Some residents embrace a DIY home security option. Others want the reassurance or additional features that come with professional home alarm installation companies. Newer homes may be pre-wired for security systems. These systems can also include wireless security cameras and direct notifications to your smartphone if an alarm is triggered.
According to the Nevada Security Association, Henderson, Las Vegas and Clark counties all require businesses doing home alarm installation and monitoring to have special business licenses that can help ensure customers they are following all local guidelines.
In Las Vegas, police officers will not respond to a home just because an alarm goes off. They require “visual verification” -- meaning somebody needs to see a burglary in process. This means security cameras are a vital component of any effective home alarm system in Las Vegas. The visual verification requirement reduces the number of false alarms and wasted police time. While other city’s police departments would fine a resident for a false alarm, this isn’t necessary in Las Vegas because of the visual verification process.
Many municipal police departments have voluntary programs where homeowners can register their cameras. This way, if a crime occurs nearby, police officers know to follow up with the owner and ask him or her to review the footage for potential evidence. Such programs can help solve otherwise unsolved crimes and keep neighborhoods safer.
