Car insurance offers financial protection in the event of a vehicle-related incident, like a collision, theft or other type of loss. It’s also legally required by the State of Nevada, with new minimum coverages established July 1, 2018. Drivers have two ways to purchase car insurance: directly from a provider or from a broker, also called an agency. To help you get coverage that’s right for your vehicle and budget, our partners at ConsumerAffairs researched the best car insurance in Las Vegas.
How to choose a car insurance company in Las Vegas
Before July 2018, Nevada had the second-lowest minimum car insurance requirements in the country. In a change that took effect July 1, 2018, drivers are now required to carry higher amounts of liability insurance, which protects you if you are at fault for an accident and pays for injuries to others and damages to their property.
Nevada’s change in law makes it less likely that drivers will have to pay for others’ medical bills and car repairs out of pocket. The new minimum coverages, commonly referred to as “25/50/20” break down like this:
New Nevada auto insurance requirements: 25/50/20
For bodily injury per person
For bodily injury per accident
For property damage
One-third of drivers in Nevada carry the minimum 25/50/20 coverage. A larger number choose to purchase more insurance, both by adding to liability coverage amounts and by purchasing other types of coverage:
A collision policy covers damage to your vehicle resulting from a collision, no matter who is at fault.
A comprehensive policy covers theft or other damage to your vehicle due to causes other than a collision, like vandalism, falling objects or fire.
An uninsured or underinsured motorist policy covers medical costs for you and passengers in the vehicle if you are injured in an accident caused by another driver who does not have coverage or does not have enough coverage to pay.
A medical payments policy covers medical costs for you and passengers in the vehicle if you are injured, regardless of who is at fault. This coverage also pays for injuries if you are a pedestrian hit by a vehicle.
How much does car insurance cost in Las Vegas?
Car insurance premiums depend on a variety of factors, including driving record, history of claims, age and gender, credit and the type of vehicle. The deductible, or the amount of money owed out of pocket before coverage kicks in, also affects the cost of auto insurance in Las Vegas. Deductibles apply just to collision and comprehensive coverage.
Another variable is the neighborhood where you live. If you live in a primarily residential area like MacDonald Ranch in Henderson, you can expect to pay less for car insurance than someone who lives downtown.
